Procedures

General surgery is a diverse practice of surgery that involves many different modalities of surgical expertise.

  • Breast: review of diagnostic tests such as mammograms and ultrasounds; ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, biopsy of breast lesions with or without radiographic assistance; partial, total, or radical mastectomy; sentinel node biopsies and axillary dissections; and Mammosite balloon placement for 5 day targeted radiation treatment.
  • Laparoscopy: hernia, gallbladder, colon, adrenal, and splenic surgery.
  • Intestines (small and large): excision of the small bowel or colon for obstruction, inflammation (diverticulitis or enteritis), or cancers; appendectomy.
  • Gallbladder: removal of the gallbladder for gallstones or tumors or exploration of the common bile duct for obstruction.
  • Hernias: repair of hiatal hernias, inguinal hernias, umbilical hernias, and incisional hernias.
  • Rectum and anus: surgery for cancers, hemorrhoids, or fissures; sigmoidoscopy.
  • Liver: biopsy and excision of tumors; insertion of shunts to treat ascites and complications due to cirrhosis.
  • Pancreas: excision for tumors or obstruction and/or bypass of obstructions.
  • Stomach: excision of the stomach for ulcers or tumors.
  • Vascular system: removal of blockages in carotid arteries and extremity arteries; varicose-vein surgery.
  • Skin: removal of moles, skin cancers, skin grafts.
  • Vascular access: insertion of ports for chemotherapy and dialysis, AV fistulas, and bypass grafts.
  • Lymph nodes: biopsies for diagnostic purposes and excision for treatment of tumors.
  • Endocrine: thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal gland surgery.
  • Wound care management: treat infection and promote healing.
